For Kentucky Derby 2020 Racing, Nadal is one of the favorite one, suffering a fracture to his left front leg and was retired following a workout on Thursday at Santa Anita.
He already had earned 150 qualifying points and ranked #1 in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) poll of 3-year-olds. After confirmation from co-owner George Bolton, the news of this injury was reported at first by the BloodHorse.
In the split division of the Arkansas Derby, Nadal was coming off a win which was his fourth straight win. A Surgery has been performed to repair his fractured leg. He had finished a half-mile workout and as winner of Grade 1 stakes, he might have to go to the breeding shed.
For trainer Bob Baffert, this has been a Turbulent time and with an incredible bench of three undefeated horses, he started the week for the Kentucky Derby 2020, which is scheduled for 5th September. But media reports said on Tuesday that Charlatan, the Baffert-trained winner of Arkansas Derby division tested positive for lidocaine, an analgesic. As a drug, Lidocaine has an approval, but only in certain doses. It is believed that crossing the legal limit was positive in this case.
A split sample has been sent to a different laboratory for examination. If the result comes negative, then it’s ok. If the second test support the first test then there would be definite investigation which could disqualify Charlatan from the Arkansas Derby and Baffert could be fined and suspended.
Charlatan would be compatible to run in other qualifying races.
On June 20, both Charlatan and Nadal were scheduled to run in the Belmont Stakes. At Belmont, Charlatan may run in the Woody Stephens.
Authentic, Baffert’s third horse, undefeated in three starts is ready to run on June 6 at Santa Anita Derby.
